Passado e presente do patrimônio edificado em Manaus: identidade, uso e ressignificação como forma de preservação

Abstract

Modernization and the advancement of housing development are results of the contemporary way of life of human being, demand the occupation of urban space due to the demographic growth and in some situations the need for the reuse of certain areas, such as what can be observed in the Historical Center of Manaus. The buildings taken as built heritage of the city, and which are abandoned, characterize a problem between cultural goods, with which the population has no identification mainly because they are not aware of local history, and the interest of the government with the question. Aiming to identify what measures the government authorities could take to ensure that these buildings gain a new social importance without losing their historical and cultural value, pointing out the difficulties it faces in promoting such actions and highlighting the need to preserve historical buildings in the center of Manaus, while gradually identifying the abandonment of a portion of these. Four historical buildings illustrate the problematic presented in this research, bibliographical and documentary materials provide pertinent information about the history and cultural of these constructions that justify the classification of these as cultural patrimony. The contact with representatives of the government authorities, designated to safeguard these goods, served as a guide to address the main existing preservation policies, while the dialogue with people who cohabit adjacent to these buildings, thus selected, provided to address the issue of cultural identity, reuse and re-signification of this heritage by the population.
