Zusammenfassung: The consumption of meat from wild animals is a serious and recurrent problem throughout the world and also in the Amazon region. Environmental education based on the perception of the target audience about the problem is therefore necessary to solve it. The objective of this study was to characterize the knowledge about the fauna and the consumption of wild animals among students of the 6th year of elementary school in relation to the fauna of the region, as they perceive its importance for the environment and the problems related to its consumption, in addition to identifying if they consume game meat and if there is any food taboo regarding the consumption of wild animals. A total of 146 questionnaires were applied at a school in the urban area of the municipality of Alvarães, state of Amazonas, between August and October 2016. The study was attended by 72 students and 74 students with a mean age of 12.2 years old (10- 16). The students' perception of the local fauna is consistent with what exists in the urban area of Alvarães. Few species of animals that do not inhabit our region have appeared in the answers about the animals that exist in the region. Most respondents believe that wildlife is important to the environment. However most students stated that they consume game meat more than once a week. The rejection to the consumption of some types of meat was more related to the palate, filthy, bad smell, to make bad the health. Taboos and religious reasons were not reasons to avoid consumption of some type of meat
